He may be prolific for Manchester City, but Erling Haaland will be be absent from Europe’s biggest football party this summer.

Haaland’s Norway have failed to qualify for Euro 2024 which is no surprise, really, given they have not qualified for a major tournament since 2000.

BBC Sport looks at some of the players who will not be in Germany in June and July when Italy will be looking to defend their title.

Erling Haaland (Norway and Manchester City)

Haaland has yet to appear at a major tournament with Norway

Erling Haaland may be a Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup Treble winner but that does not guarantee you a place at the Euros.

Haaland scored six of Norway’s 14 goals in qualifying but will be absent when the likes of Kylian Mbappe (France), Harry Kane (England) and Kevin de Bruyne (Belgium) are all expected to be in action for their countries at Euro 2024.

Martin Odegaard (Norway and Arsenal)

Norway’s failure to make it through qualifying also means Haaland’s international team-mate Martin Odegaard will be absent from the tournament, which takes place between 14 June and 14 July.

Arsenal captain Odegaard, 24, scored his country’s second goal in a 2-1 qualifying win against Georgia on 12 September. However, Norway finished third in Group A – six points behind second-placed Scotland, who are off to Germany.

Victor Lindelof (Sweden and Manchester United)

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof played in all three games as Sweden defeated both Poland and Slovakia – after drawing against Spain – to reach the knockout stage at Euro 2020.

But the Swedes finished third in their qualifying group for the latest edition, 10 points adrift of Group F winners Belgium and nine points behind Austria.

Dejan Kulusevski (Sweden and Tottenham)

Like Lindelof, Dejan Kulusevski will also have next summer off following Sweden’s failure to qualify.

The Tottenham winger, 23, was awarded the Guldbollen, for the best Swedish male player of the year, in 2022.

Kulusevski started all eight of Sweden’s Euro 2024 qualifying games, scoring one goal and providing two assists.

Alexander Isak (Sweden and Newcastle)

Alexander Isak helped Newcastle to a memorable 4-1 win over Paris-St-Germain in the Champions League in September.

He became Sweden’s youngest goalscorer at 17 years, three months and 22 days in a 6-0 win over Slovakia in January 2017.

Stefan Savic (Montenegro and Atletico Madrid)

Stefan Savic won the Premier League at Manchester City and has won La Liga and the Europa League at his present club Atletico Madrid.

The defender, who was sent off three times in the space of five appearances for Atletico last season, chipped in with a couple of goals for Montenegro in qualifying.

But it was not enough to propel his country to the Euros as Montenegro finished behind Hungary and Serbia in qualifying.

Evan Ferguson (Republic of Ireland and Brighton)

He is only 19, but Evan Ferguson already has a Premier League hat-trick to his name after helping Brighton demolish Newcastle in September.

Ferguson became the Republic of Ireland’s youngest scorer since legendary striker Robbie Keane with his goal against Latvia in March.

The teenage forward will miss this tournament after the Republic finished fourth in their qualifying group, but has time on his side.

Jonny Evans (Northern Ireland and Manchester United)

Jonny Evans helped Northern Ireland reach the knockout stage of Euro 2016.

The Manchester United defender, who turns 36 in January, is still going strong for club and country but Northern Ireland have missed out on a place at next summer’s tournament after seven defeats in 10 games in qualifying.

Brennan Johnson (Wales and Tottenham)

Wales’ Brennan Johnson has made an impressive start to life at Tottenham since signing from Nottingham Forest in the summer.

The 22-year-old will still hope to have an impact at Euro 2024 but will need to get there via the play-offs after Croatia pipped them to automatic qualification.
