Super Bowl 2024, Chiefs vs. 49ers score: Live game updates, halftime show, NFL highlights, watch live stream

The first two quarters of Super Bowl LVIII are in the books. At the break, San Francisco hold a 10-3 lead over the Chiefs in what was an opening half largely dominated by two stout defenses. Now, Patrick Mahomes will look to improve on his 8-2 playoff record when trailing by seven or more points.

The 49ers looked like they were going to hit the ground running, as they quickly moved into Kansas City territory thanks to three straight plays of 10-plus yards. However, as Christian McCaffrey rushed up the right side from the Chiefs 29-yard line, the star running back fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Kansas City. While that turnover eliminated a scoring opportunity for the offense, it wasn’t compounded into a bigger problem with a score by Mahomes and the offense. Instead, the Niners defense quickly forced a three-and-out.

Both defenses stood tall throughout a scoreless first quarter, but San Francisco’s offense found a spark to bring it deep into Chiefs territory in the closing seconds. That led to the first points of the game courtesy of a 55-yard field goal by Jake Moody, which proved to be the longest field goal in Super Bowl history

The ensuing possession momentarily felt like a momentum shift in favor of the Chiefs, particularly when Mahomes uncorked a 53-yard pass to Mecole Hardman to put the ball inside the 49ers 10-yard line. However, a fumble by Isiah Pacheco on the following play was recovered by San Francisco and erased K.C. getting on the board at that spot.

Scoring remained at a minimum for the bulk of the first half, which led to Kyle Shanahan going into his bag of tricks. Inside of five minutes remaining in the half, wide receiver Jauan Jennings threw a touchdown to Christian McCaffrey to put the 49ers up by double digits. The Chiefs were able to avoid being shut out in the first half thanks to a 28-yard field goal by Harrison Butker with 20 seconds left in the second quarter to make it a one-possession game.

Will the 49ers hang onto their lead and hoist their first Lombardi Trophy since 1995? Or will the Chiefs rally in the second half to win a second consecutive title? We’re about to find out.
