Aryna Sabalenka v Cori Gauff Head to Head
There have been four previous meetings between these two players and Gauff leads 3-1. Interestingly, all of those matches came in the round of 16,
Sabalenka’s only win came on the indoor hardcourt of Ostrava in 2020 while Gauff has won in Lexington, Rome and Toronto.
Sabalenka Scrapes Past Krejcikova
Given the kind of form that Barbora Krejcikova has been in recent times, it was never going to be easy for Sabalenka but she managed to make it past her Czech opponent in three sets.
Sabalenka defeated Krejcikova 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 to enter the quarterfinal of this tournament for the first time in her career. In her three previous attempts, the best she had managed was a fourth round appearance in 2019.
Having earlier gotten herself a bye from Lesia Tsurenko, Sabalenka needed two hours and four minutes for her victory as she used her solid serving to nudge past her opponent.
Both players lost their serve three times in the match but it was Sabalenka who got the all-decisive break in the final set of the encounter. It came in the third game of the third set and following that the only time Sabalenka did face a break-point was while serving for the match.
Can she now adjust to these slower surfaces in Indian Wells against a player who has done well on them.

Gauff Stretched by Peterson
Gauff was a 1/5 odds on favourite to get past Rebecca Peterson but did not have it as easy as the odds suggest. In the end she won her fourth round match 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to make it through to the last eight for the first time in this competition.
In a match lasting two hours and 18 minutes, not too many would have expected the kind of second set that was on offer. Sure Gauff had dropped her serve early in the first set but when she came through to win a couple of breaks in a row, things looked to have gotten back to normal very quickly.
Expect that they hadn’t.
Peterson came back in style in the second set, breaking her opponent twice in a row to grab a 5-0 lead. She wrapped things up quickly after that.
Things could have gotten a lot worse as Gauff dropped serve yet again early in the decider and Peterson went on to take a 4-2 lead. It was probably a case of upping the ante at the right time for the American though as Peterson lost her nerve – and serve – to allow Gauff to come back and win four games in a row from there on.
Gauff will need to do a lot better than what she did here to find a way past Sabalenka.
Sabalenka v Gauff Prediction and Tip
Gauff is 13/10 here but what’s important to note is the slower surfaces could assist her. We will have to go with the contrarian view – i.e. for a Gauff win. Might even see three sets.
