Ruby Walsh Cheltenham Festival Tips on Day Three: Thursday 16th March 2023

See below the Ruby Walsh Cheltenham Festival tips on day three, as the ex-jockey and still leading rider at the meeting selects his best bets on all seven races.

  • 1.30: Turners Novices’ Chase ITV1: MIGHTY POTTER @ Evs with SpreadEx / APPRECIATE IT (Forecast)

The Gordon Elliott-trained Mighty Potter has excelled since going chasing – winning all three starts – and Ruby expects him to make it four. Apprecciate It, who won the 2021 Supreme is the one for the forecast.

  • 2.10: Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle ITV1: NO SELECTION

  • 2.50: Ryanair Chase ITV1: SHISHKIN @ 4/5 with SpreadEx

Shishkin was super-impressive in winning the Ascot Chase last time out and Ruby thinks he’s going to be hard to beat again here. Loves the longer trip and can give trainer Nicky Henderson his third win in this race.

  • 3.30: Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle ITV1: TEAHUPOO @ 3/1 with SpreadEx

A strong Irish presence in this race and one of those is Teahupoo. This Gordon Elliott runner has won 8 of his 11 starts and Ruby thinks he can give his trainer a first success in this race.

  • 4.10: Plate Handicap Chase ITV1: FRERO BANBOU (e/w) @ 10/1 with SpreadEx

The Venetia William yard have a good record in this race and with just 10-6 this 8 year-old gets in with a featherweight.

  • 4.50: Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle RTV: LOT OF JOY @ 5/1 with Paddy Power / HALKA DU TARBERT (e/w) @ 9/1 with SpreadEx

Luccia will be popular here, but Ruby has strong connections still with the Wille Mullins yard and so it’s interesting he’s going for Lot Of Joy here. This 5 year-old was a good winner last time out and looks the value call.

  • 5.30: Kim Muir Challenge Cup RTV: STUMPTOWN (NAP) @ 5/1 with SpreadEx

This amateur riders’ race often goes to the better jockeys and one of those is Barry O’Neill, who rides Stumptown. Was a tidy winner last time at Sandown and also the time before at Thurles. Stays well and can land the three-timer.
