Liverpool were expecting to be in outstanding form in preparation for a historic Champions League comeback after their 5-2 dismantling at Anfield in a rematch of last year’s final three weeks ago.
Jurgen Klopp’s side humiliated Erik ten Hag’s in form Manchester United 7-0 just over a week ago, a match in which the whole team clicked and fans were daring to dream about their Champions League chances once more.
Fast forward a week and in the final match before travelling to Madrid, Liverpool fall 1-0 to bottom of the table Bournemouth, a team who had one just one of their last 10 matches and already been beaten 9-0 by Liverpool this season.
The Reds have fallen back down to sixth in the table now, though are still well in the hunt for a top four place, as they sit six points behind fourth place Tottenham with a game in hand.
Real Madrid have only won one of their four matches since their romp at Anfield, with that win coming on Saturday as they defeated Espanyol 3-1 after back to back draws in the league sandwiched a defeat to Barcelona in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi final.
The recent dropping of points has let their El Clasico rivals open up a nine point gap at the top of La Liga, with Carlo Ancelotti and co now looking increasingly likely to fail their defence of the league title the won last season.
Real Madrid have won six of the last seven meetings with Liverpool, the other one ending in a draw, with the Reds’ last win coming in 2009, in a last 16 tie which included a 1-0 win at the Bernabeu thanks to a late Yossi Benayoun header.
