Known for being one of the most marketable tennis players in history, Maria Sharapova used her vast experience to impart some valuable advice to young athletes regarding endorsement deals.

On March 3, the five-time Grand Slam champion appeared on ‘The Glossy Podcast’ and advised young athletes to be cautious in choosing the people they associate with, and to select partners who will help them grow and improve as individuals.

“Be smart with people you align with, and choose partners that will further help elevate who you are,” she said.

The former World No. 1 further advised athletes to consider partnering with companies that are willing to invest in their marketing and personal development, even if the initial deal may be smaller. She suggested that such partnerships could be more valuable than accepting a large paycheck from a company that may not have much marketing spend or long-term potential.

“Relationships that maybe start as smaller deals, but have a very strong foundation that will put in marketing dollars to elevate you as a human, might be worth more than taking a big paycheck from a company that doesn’t have a lot of marketing spend,” she added.

Maria Sharapova’s advice on endorsement matters is especially valuable due to her impressive financial success in the tennis world. As the fourth highest earner in the history of the WTA tour, Sharapova’s experience in negotiating and securing lucrative endorsements has clearly paid off.
